Gerard “Gary” Toth grew up in Silver Spring, became a journeyman machinist, then earned a B.S. in aerospace engineering at University of Maryland. With his military draft guaranteed, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1971 and married Martha in 1972. During two years of helicopter pilot training, they moved every few months to another middle-of-nowhere “garden spot.” He did a three-year stint of search and rescue out of Clark Air Base in the Philippines, then switched to Special Operations out of Hurlburt Field FL, where Leilah was born. Anxious to leave the service, he took an offer from Ford to work as an engineer in Dearborn, where Valerie was born. He spent 25 years there, ending as a technical specialist solving design and operational problems—work that he loved. Gary was alerted to his Stage IV cancer by a sudden loss of speech in 2002. For nearly three years, he went through every standard (and a few experimental) treatments, a period of somewhat normal retirement interspersed with moments of pain and terror. He died a week after his 59th birthday.
Married to Monica Wright. Father of Chris and Tim. Jerry died peacefully on April 27, 2023. This is his obituary. In the spirit of giving back, Jerry donated his brain for research purposes, and it turns out this was important. See this report from Brain Support Network.
